Downtown Work May Garner Award
By Cassie Smith

The city of Bryan has been named a finalist for a state award for its improvements to downtown.

The nomination is recognition of the city's devotion to revitalizing the area, said John Hendry, executive director of the Downtown Bryan Economic Development Association.

The city was named a finalist for the Best Public Improvement Award by the Texas Downtown Association. City officials have invested more than $1.1 million in improvements since 2001 as part of the downtown master plan, Hendry said.

"The best thing about this, it shows that the city of Bryan is actually putting the plan into action, and the results are very noticeable with the new streetscape and landscaping that has been completed," he said.

Awards will be presented at the 2008 Texas Downtown Revitalization Conference in Temple on Nov. 11-14.

Bryan was also recognized by the group last year when the city's Texas Reds Steak and Grape Festival was named the best promotional event or festival.

"A lot of downtowns are working with the same issues but don't have nearly the same level of commitment," Deputy City Manager Joey Dunn said. "We're just honored to be recognized."

Hendry and Project Planner Julie Fulgham nominated the city for the award, noting the improvements made to streets, sidewalks, landscaping and utilities.

"With each tree planted and brick laid, a property once neglected and deteriorating was given new life and restored," they wrote in the nomination.
